Mother-child
relationship in Japan
I
would like to rely on my own personal experiences in the United States in
discussing this topic. It was in the US, a rural town in the Mid-West that we
lived in for 17 years and this is where or only son was raised. There could be
many Japanese communities in larger cities in the US, but as our town was
relatively small with 160 thousand of population, there were only few Japanese
families, except for those of psychiatrists visiting temporarily for their
study and training at the Menninger Foundation which was a well know
psychiatric hospital of psychoanalytic orientation. These relatively young psychiatrists and a few
psychologist spend 2~4 years there for their training while quite often raising
their young children in that unfamiliar environment. As my purpose of the stay
was a long term one, i.e. to become a trained psychiatrist and fully trained
psychoanalyst, our stay was rather extended and therefore our son spent his
entire childhood until the beginning of the adolescence in the American
environment.
