Issue of non-interpretation

Japanese people’s tendency of keeping things hidden has some serious impact on the essential therapeutic intervention of interpretation. Although many Japanese analysts subscribe to the essential and crucial role of interpretation, especially that of here and now transference implication, many analytically trained therapists mention awkwardness
An old Japanese saying of “iwazu ga hana” (better leave it unsaid) is also strongly held among Japanese.

In another contribution (1987), Kitayama pointed out that the Japanese language is generally used loosely and is grammatically ill-structured. He contended that "to a large extent the Japanese communicate ideas while keeping them unspoken" (p. 499), implying that this is a manifestation on the level of language of the previously mentioned Japanese propensity to hide in order to preserve values. Kitayama also suggested a possible relationship between the ambiguity of the Japanese language and the high prevalence of social phobia. His idea of a "morbid fear of ambiguity" (p. 501) refers to the Japanese paranoid fear of being misunderstood by others because of their secretive and ambiguous mode of speech, which is inherent in the sentence structure of Japanese language.
One of the prominent characteristics of Japanese language is that the subject of a sentence is often absent. Some might prefer to say that it is often omitted, not just absent. There are many ways of understanding or interpreting this practice, but in most likelihood, clarification of who you are referring to can be perceived as impolite and intrusive, just in a same way as staring at someone, or seeing emperor's face directly. It has been a practice to refer to some noble or powerful people not by the very name, but the place where that person resides or is located. For example when Kakuei Tanaka was in the height of his political power, Mejiro was as synonymous to himself (Mejiro in Tokyo is where his residence was located.)

Prohibition of “don’t Look” and secretiveness
Kitayama, who made many psychoanalytic contributions (1985, 1987) to Japanese culture, looked at an old taboo often found in Japanese folklore against seeing and then revealing, in the notion of the “prohibition of ‘don’t look’.” He (1985) argues that this “preoedipal taboo” is repeatedly observed in this folklore, and points out that in many Japanese stories, when the hero (usually a man) violates this taboo, I.e., when he breaks a promise to his lover or wife not to look at her in certain situations, he usually sees, instead of a beautiful woman, an animal that is "an ugly mixture of split 'good' and 'bad' mothers" (p. 184). Even though this taboo is eventually to be violated (as opposed to the oedipal incest taboo, which is never to be violated throughout life), the abundance of this type of folklore in Japan exemplifies that there is a belief that revelation will spoil one's positive values. This inevitably reminds many Japanese people born before the World War II that Japanese emperor should not be looked at directly, as it challenges and also spoils the authority of the emperor.

In relation to the oedipal issue, Kitayama states: “As Freud used the Oedipus myth to illustrate an unconscious event in human affairs, I think they also reflect certain aspects of the infant's development. As the stories develop only between the hero and the heroine, they need interpretations in terms of a two-body relationship.”(1985) “The prohibition of don't look is another important element. As the hero breaks this prohibition, he usually sees an animal instead of a beautiful woman. This is such an ineffective form of taboo that the hero cannot help breaking it and being confronted with an ugly mixture of split 'good' and 'bad' mothers. The hero's 'animalization' is accompanied by his insufficient capacity to accept the whole object. This maternal or pre-oedipal prohibition could be called 'the taboo to be broken in time' in contrast to the paternal taboo of incest, which is absolute.”

Non-expression and cultural value

As the above-mentioned Zeami’s thought, the issue of non-expression is also related to their sense of beauty and aesthetic value. Shuzo Kuki’s notion of “iki”. In his masterpiece, “The Structure of ‘Iki’”, he made an analysis of “iki”. Iki roughly means “chic”, an aesthetic concept current among the fashionable set in Edo era. He stresses that it is one of the essential values of Japanese culture. For the lack of English equivalent, Iki is described in numerous ways to describe; Iki is an expression of simplicity, sophistication, spontaneity, and originality. It is ephemeral, romantic, straightforward, measured, audacious, smart, and unselfconscious. Iki is not overly refined, pretentious, complicated, showy, slick, coquettish, or, generally, cute. At the same time, iki may exhibit any of those traits in a smart, direct, and unabashed manner.

What seems to be essential in Iki is its beauty in indirect and ephemeral nature. What is overly showy and ostensible is “Yabo”, the antonym of Iki. One of the examples of the expression of “iki” is haura, literary meaning the lining of haori. When the Sumptuary law was issued repeatedly by Edo government in ancient Japan, people started to design an elegant and stylish pattern underside of jacket, which is usually worn in and never show outside.

First, I was thinking about Japanese people’s sense of shyness or bashfulness behind this strange phenomenon. Certainly, they are shy about expressing our feeling, especially a show of affection to others. They might not necessarily feel hurt or painful if they hug and kiss at the airport upon welcoming our family members, but they feel embarrassed and awkward. Toward who? Of course toward their imagined beholders and spectators, but mainly toward the very family members or lovers themselves, and also toward themselves.
However, I came to believe that in addition to, or in the back ground of the feeling of bashfulness and awkwardness, there is a belief that is ingrained in the Japanese culture: that what is essential and important does not reveal and manifest itself: Knowledge of traditional art and craftsmanship at the highest levels is kept esoteric and should not be propagated to the general public. It was considered that truly essential and valuable points could not be verbally expressed or revealed. Some psychoanalysts have dealt with the issue of secretiveness and non-expression in the past. Doi (1986) suggested that this belief has a long history in Japanese culture. He quoted a statement by Zeami, a Japanese aesthetician, actor, and playwright in the 15th century, which goes “What is concealed is the flower. What is not concealed cannot be the flower.”

Balint

Japanese Oedipus and the Issue of Secretiveness

Our Japanese culture is often characterized by its secretiveness and non-expression in various social contexts. During my 17 years of stay in the US, I had many chances to see American family members hugging and kissing together at the airport when they were getting reunited or departed. Some of my American friends looked puzzled to see Japanese family members including my own, showing very little expression of emotion in these situations.
There is another poignant example which shows or non-expression is widespread and common in our daily life. Japanese spouses are often confused when they find themselves not knowing how to address to their partners. It might be surprising to western people that Japanese quite often feel embarrassed to use their partners’ first name when they address to them, ending up saying, for example, “hey, give me a cup of tea, please?” without using any pronoun such as “you” or “darling” or “honey”, or “dear” etc.
