Homo sapiens, 英知人
Homo phaenomenon, 現象人
Homo noumenon, 本体人
Homo faber, 工作人
Homo patiens,

Two prototypes of maternal attention/involvement across cultures

Instead of being bogged down on stereotypical classification of Japanese vs. Western type of mothering, I would like to propose two prototypes, one of which happens to be seen relatively frequently in Japanese household, whereas the other in Western household.
Type1. Close maternal presence, characterized by mother’s strong emotional attention to the child.
Type 2. Moderate maternal presence, characterized by mother’s “not so strong” emotional attention to the child.

We cannot ask why these two types are formed in different cultures. We just foresee how these two types affect child’s emotional growth.
Here are some theoretical implications in each of them.
As for type 1, a child, say a daughter might grow up and become independent due to the fact that she is given too much maternal care and she leaves her house in or der to escape her mother’ attention. Her fathers would not rescue her as he might be quite wrapped up with his own duties in his company. If she is lucky enough, she feels that she received fair enough or a little excessive maternal affection and care and is eager to take up her own life. In a sense, she “had it enough”. (Just the way that our friend’s son A did.) However, I would like to mention some of the risks and drawbacks related to this type of mothering. Many of my clients, especially female patients are quite often intensely angry with their mothers as they feel that they were not listened to by them. They feel that their mothers imposed onto them what they want their daughters to feel and think. Eventual resolution of their problem is quite often to encourage to cut their ties altogether, perhaps indefinitely.
As for type 2, as I often experienced in the United States, a daughter grows up in a environment where she is left alone. Quite often her mother is preoccupied with something else, other than her child. I do not know if there is any major drawback of the maternal care if mother’s emotional attention is just “not so strong”. However, it appears that there are more chances in that situation where a daughter might become a victim of emotional neglect or is exposed to any type of emotional trauma when she is not paid any due maternal attention. Many adult children might feel that if some mishaps occur to them, and they need some place for respite, their homes are not really the best environment as their parents have their own lives and they are not really ready to take up on their child-rearing tasks again.
In one of the episodes which struck me while I was practicing in the US, one of my patients was looking for a place to live without much success. He recently came home to our town from another state where he took a job but got depressed and could no longer stay there, and needed some help from their parents. His parents refused to take him back, even just temporarily, with the following excuse. “Unfortunately we don’t have any bedroom available for our son,” which somehow appeared to have sounded plausible for the local welfare authority as well.

So, what has happened for the next thirty years up till now? It appears that the study of SSP in Japan gradually lost its initial curiosity and interest. If the low percentage of type A means something different from the attachment problem, but reflects the cultural difference, using SSP does not make much sense as it might be like measuring something with a yardstick which is not approved across cultures. However, I consider that there is still something to glean from. The failure of the application of SSP at least highlighted the fact that “typically characterized by constantly close physical contact and by the infrequency of separation from the mother”.

The Japanese family situation and the Oedipal issue

In my research field, i.e., psychoanalysis, the notion of Amae is frequently discussed and is considered as a key concept in discussing Japanese mentality and Western mentality. While discussing the issue of Oedipus Complex, I once discussed as follows:

To be able to further understand the Oedipal issue in Japan, we need to reflect on family circumstances in society, which are perhaps significantly different from those in the Western world where the Oedipal theory was formed. In Japanese households, children are usually fairly close to their fathers, but their relationship tends to be less close than with their mothers. Young Japanese children usually sleep in the same room with their parents at night, unlike Western children who are usually given their individual bedroom very soon after being born. Japanese fathers’ attention tends to be often focused on their daytime work, and their evenings and weekends are also significantly given over to their employers. In a sense, Japanese sons can gain their mother’s attention with much less effort or consideration than Western boys, and their fear of punishment and castration anxiety is present to a much lesser extent than what Freud postulated in their Western counterparts. Of course, this does not deny the presence of Oedipal father in the Japanese household. Traditional Japanese fathers have been rather strict and disciplinary toward their children, counterbalancing mothers’ rather indulgent attitudes to some extent. However, Japanese fathers are not very possessive of their wives. The entire family sleeps in one bedroom with children flanked by their parents so they feel close to both of them. Children are not readily punished by their fathers because of their closeness to their mothers. Some fathers might welcome closeness of their children to their mothers while, at the same time, feeling left out and envious toward them to some extent.
Thus, Japanese fathers are not really castrating toward their children. However, they themselves are under the threat of castration in his workplace and community, where his show of faith and submission is constantly called for.
As I stated before, the punitive agent in their society is not altogether a powerful father-like figure within the household. It can be scrutinizing groups or the society that an individual belongs to. In Japanese society, a conspicuous person risks being regarded as someone who will disturb the social equilibrium. Peace and harmony are regarded as crucially important to the common good. People strive to be like others in order to escape being ostracized by society. In the Oedipal story, the taboo is hostility toward the father. In Japanese society, the taboo is to challenge the hidden or unwritten rules that govern society.

The issue of strange situation paradigm in Japan

It is of interest for us to take a look at how the well-known strange situation paradigm (SSP) by Mary Ainsworth was conducted in Japanese environment.
There was a famous study by “Miyake and his collaborators who conducted the SSP with Japanese infants living in Sapporo. Miyake et al (1985) and Takahashi reported that there were more than 30% C's and no A's in their sample. This results differ strikingly from those of the American samples, that is, there were 10% - 20% C's and 20%-30% A's”(Ujiie, 1986).

Those who are not familiar with these typing, here is a rough guideline of how these types are conceptualized in the SSP.
A: Insecure Avoidant
Insecure avoidant children do not orientate to their attachment figure while investigating the environment. They do not seek contact with the attachment figure when distressed. Such children are likely to have a caregiver who is insensitive and rejecting of their needs (Ainsworth, 1979).
B: Secure Attachment
Such children feel confident that the attachment figure will be available to meet their needs. They use the attachment figure as a safe base to explore the environment and seek the attachment figure in times of distress (Main, & Cassidy, 1988). Securely attached infants are easily soothed by the attachment figure when upset. Infants develop a secure attachment when the caregiver is sensitive to their signals, and responds appropriately to their needs.
C: Insecure Ambivalent / Resistant
Here children adopt an ambivalent behavioral style towards the attachment figure. The child will commonly exhibit clingy and dependent behavior, but will be rejecting of the attachment figure when they engage in interaction. The child fails to develop any feelings of security from the attachment figure.

They argued about why in Japanese situation, there is 0 % of type A. Again, I quote Ujiie’s statement.

Miyake et al (1985) answered this question by throwing doubt on the assumption of the ABC typology and applicability of the procedure to Japanese infants. Owing to the facts that Japanese mother and infant relationship is typically characterized by constantly close physical contact and by the infrequency of separation from the mother, and that the Japanese infants tend to have a temperamental disposition towards fearfulness and irritability, it can be expected that the Strange Situation will be too strange and too stressful for Japanese infants. Thus they did not consider the C type of response of the Japanese infants as a direct reflection of a greater tendency to be insecurely attached. Their interpretation was supported by Ujiie & Miyake (1985) and Ujiie & Chen Request for reprint should be sent to Tatsuo Ujiie, Kunitachi College of Music, 5-5-1 Kashiwa-cho, Tachikawa-shi, Tokyo 190, Japan. - 1 - 24 (1985). Ujiie & Miyake (1985) described Japanese infants' behavior patterns in the Strange Situation and made a comparison with Ainsworth's description on American infants. They found that Japanese infants tended to be extremely distressed throughout the strange situation. Even in Episode 2, they tended to activate attachment behaviors such as seeking proximity and contact with their mothers, and inhibit exploratory behaviors. These tendencies indicated that they seemed to experience strong stress even in the beginning of the procedure, because, according to the attachment theory of Bowlby (1969) and Ainsworth (Ainsworth et aI, 1978), the attachment system was in general activated when infants experienced distress, while the explorative system was inhibited under stress. In the case of U. S. samples, most infants actively explored the unfamiliar situation, and did not activate an attachment system in Episode 2. This fact seems to suggest that the psychological meaning of Strange Situation differs even at Episode l.(underline added by Okano).
